Loons of the Adirondacks


The mournful call and yodel of the Common Loon was the greatest pursuit of my early birding career. Requiring crystal clear water far from human development, my first encounter would call for a 6 hour drive from my home in Brooklyn to the town of Keene deep in the Adirondack Mountains. There, at the end of a string of lakes feeding the Hudson river, soaked and exhausted after a night of sleeping in torrential rain, I finally heard the beautiful moan of the Loon as it pierced the morning fog.
